These ʻolelo noʻeau are four guiding principles of Hamakua Youth Center (HYC). Since we began in 1996, Our Kuleana has been to share with Aloha to our youth, families and community. Through Laulimawith our partners, community, families and youth we have established programs and activities that has continued to grow. We Mahalo our youth, families, community and partners for the continued support.
As you may have heard, Hamakua Youth Foundation, Inc (HYC) has put an offer to purchase the old Okada Hospital, right next door. Itʻs perfect for our keiki and teens that will be attending, we have three times the space now. The property has a large wing with rooms for our keiki activities, a large kitchen, and a separate building for our teens. There are plenty of space for outdoor recreation and multiple indoor activities.
Our offer was accepted by the building’s owners, the University of Hawai‘i Foundation, contingent on our receiving an official low-interest loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. We’ve applied for the loan and we expect to hear from them in a positive way very soon.
Once we do, it’s just the beginning. We’ll need to roll up our sleeves and really get to work.
The Okada Hospital was built in 1938, and it will need extensive renovations to meet current building codes. We’ve done our due diligence to assess needed renovations, and we’re working with a very generous volunteer architect to help with drawings and permitting processes. The new Center will need all new plumbing, electrical wiring, and modifications for ADA accessibility.
For that we need funding. That’s why we started our “$100K in 100 Days” capital campaign.
If you would like to invest in the future of our youth and the strength of our community—which will be their kuleana—won’t you please kokua?
